Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary

Narayan Sarovar sanctuary gets its name from the lake and village that hold the same name situated in Lakhpat, Kutch, in Northwest Gujarat. Once a rising settlement, Lakhpat is now a deserted fort. It came into existence in 1981; recently the sanctuary consists of several isolate stretches with total land of 94.8 square kilometres. It is basically desert forest site with some portions getting waterlogged in the monsoon. It houses a unique blend of wildlife and vegetation.

Scrub forest is the main vegetation here with some grasslands and rare plants. The groundwater salinity stunted tree growth which is further enhanced by rocky soil and wind. Only tough tress such as euphorbia cactus, acacia, gored, etc can grow here. Around 252 plant and tree species are found in this sanctuary including cariso, informal kendo, ogando bevel and medicinal gugal trees.

Since it is an inhospitable, dry region, one may think that Narayan Sarovar sanctuary is deprived of wildlife. But, the reality is something else. It houses a plenty of fauna that include the lesser floricans, dove, francolin, great Indian Bustard, larks, bulbul, robins, and raptors. Tourists can also see migratory birds during winter season. Chinkaras is the prime attraction in this sanctuary.

Koteshwar is one of the 12 jyotirlingas bringing the touch of spirituality. Once you reach Narayan Sarovar, you will find another old Vishnu temple, a reason that drives so many people here. As per the local stories, Lord Vishnu crated the Narayan Sarovar and lived here. This lake is regarded as holy as Mansarovar and it is among the Panch Sarovars in India for pilgrimages.

Around the month of September, the monsoon season ends. It is probably the perfect time for visiting this place because you can still witness some greenery as well as water bodies. The climate is also comfortable at this time. Most tourists prefer the stretch between December and the month of March. The Rann Utsav is organised during the winter season. It will be a complete tour as you will be exploring the sanctuary, witnessing some unique wildlife and nature while also savouring delicious Katchhi food and buying Katchhi handicrafts.
