The Mahisagar district of Gujarat is the home of the Kaleshwari group of monuments. These monuments are excellently built with complex carvings, and consisting of two big Stepwells, a water reservoir and a number of sacred idols. The Kaleshwari Group of Monuments were constructed in between the period of 10th to 16th century, although; some of them went under reconstruction in the 18th century. This is a prominent place for the Hindus who worship Lord Shiva.
Places for Hindu worshippersAt the Gummat Walu Mandir’s northern end located the Kaleshwari Mata Temple. It consists of a Mandapam, but lacks any complex carvings; containing no portraits either. Currently, two huge pillars hold up this place. The shrine’s walls are embellished with Nataraja Shiva’s images. The locals as well as tourists from around the country visit this temple, offering prayers to the deity Kaleshwari.
The Lunawada king Vakhat Singh led the construction of this holy structure. This project finished in between the period of 1735 to 1757. According to the local history, this place served as the summer palace of the king and he used to stay here quite often and hunt. As a tourist, you will get the opportunity to see some uncommon sculptures and some awe-inspiring portraits of Mahishasura Mardini, Lord Ganesha, Chamunda Devi, and Lord Vishnu. There is a gallery inside the temple premise that houses the rest of the sculptures.
There are three primary entrances in Hidimba Temple. You will get to see an image of a huge foot. As per the local beliefs, it is the feet of Hidimba, the wife of Bhima, the second eldest Pandava. Originally, the image was acquired from somewhere else and established here later. This place is also called the Hidimba Van.
The Kaleshwari Group of Monuments host a number of major events and it is the prime venue for tribal fairs organised annually including janmashtami and Maha Shivratri. Locals as well as people from all around the world gather here to witness such auspicious occasions. During festivities, professional artists come from different parts of the country and they perform folk music and tribal dances.
