Gir National Park in Gujarat is 65 kilometres distant from Junagadh. This unique wildlife sanctuary is stretched over an area of 1412 square kilometres. From the beginning of its establishment, Gir National Park has been initiating many efforts to conserve the great Asiatic lions, and this is the only site in Asia where you can find this majestic lion species roaming around in their natural habitat.
Gir National Park houses various types of birds and animals. As per the latest census, the number of Asiatic lion has increased. Besides lions, Gir is the habitat of 300 leopards approximately. Bird species are counted more than 200 and over 40 reptile species and amphibians inhabit this site. Kamleshwar Park preserves a substantial number of crocodiles. Snake species including Russell’s’ Vipers, king cobras, kraits and saw-scaled vipers are found here. In Gir National Park, visitors get to explore a diverse range of wild creatures such as hyena, Nilgai, Chinkara, Terni Eagle, python, Malabar Whistle, and so on.
In the period between mid-June and mid-October, the park stays closed because the possibilities of rain are greater due to the arrival of the Southwest monsoon. In between the period of mid-October and mid-June, the park stays open. The perfect time to visit is the month of December to the month of March and you will not face rain this time.
